Recycling better and reducing waste in the ACT
There are simple steps to reduce the amount of rubbish you send to landfill. Disposing of waste properly helps the environment. Avoiding food waste could even save you money. If you can't reduce or reuse, then recycle. Follow simple recycling rules to get your waste sorted. Find out how to recycle right with the Recyclopaedia.
Recycling
If you can't reduce or reuse, then recycling is your best choice. It helps our environment. Learn what can go in your recycling bin or taken elsewhere, like a drop-off centre. Use the Recyclopaedia as your go-to guide.
Single-use plastics
Single-use plastics pollute our waterways and natural environment. And they don't break down in landfill. Some single-use plastics are now banned in the ACT. This is part of our commitment to sustainability.
Food and garden waste
Food waste is costing households and the environment. We can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by keeping organic waste, including garden material and food, out of landfill.
Sorting other rubbish
Products and clothing in good condition, bulky items and building waste must not go in the landfill bin. Organise a collection or drop off at special collection points. Better yet, find options to reuse. Every little bit helps our environment.
Waste management
The best way to manage waste is to reduce it. Buy less. Recycle and compost. The ACT Government aims to reduce the amount of waste going to landfill and to increase resource recovery to over 90% by 2025.
